A.We provide a FREE service to production companies, location managers and location owners.
We are a non-profit-making organisation and we receive funding from local government and the UK Film Council to enable us to offer this service.
A.Our photographic library, with currently over 7,000 locations, is regularly used by filmmakers selecting locations for their productions. For more information on registering your property please visit
becoming a filming location where you can also register your property on our location library. IMPORTANT – the information we hold is strictly confidential, not in the public domain, and is only used by film production companies and local film studios.
A.Yes, we have over 2,000 crew, facilities and services covering every craft and specialism. You can
search crew and facilities directly from this site.
A.There are no set charges that apply. It will depend on a number of factors including the type of your property, the size of the crew, the length of stay and the type of production. A documentary maker is not going to have the same budget as a feature film.
Contact us and we can offer you advice on location fees.
A.We would suggest that you approach friends and family for help to avoid paying high location fees. However, some location owners are open to negotiation.
Contact us for more information.
A.Yes you can. Production companies filming in the East of England often use our extensive crew database. You can
register on our online crew database.
A.We hold a database of facilities and services and we are often the first point of contact for production companies looking for services. If you would like to be added to our database to enable us to refer production companies to you, you can
register on our online facilities database.

However, we do offer opportunities to 17-19 year olds or adults interested in learning more about sourcing locations for film and TV production. If you are interested, please
contact us for more information. This programme operates on an un-paid basis, however we may be able to pay travel expenses in some circumstances.
production
A.We will read scripts that come to us outside of a funding application and provide feedback. This usually takes around 6-8 weeks. Please contact Sam Burton in the production department prior to sending your script. There are also other organisations who provide high-quality feedback such as the Script Factory.
A.We mean films with easily identifiable cinema audiences that have depth of emotion and a powerful narrative drive, plus a strong visual and emotional landscape.
A.This is a guideline of what is and isn’t working, as defined by box office figures. Use it as a yardstick but always start with an idea of who your audience is. We’re looking for projects that are distinctive – not derivative.
A.Not if the key talent (writer, producer or director) is resident in the East of England. See our guidelines on eligibility for full details.
A.Yes, Screen East is likely to be one of a number of funding partners.
A.Our level of input depends on the project stage and our level of investment. We will seek to have an appropriate level of input with development and production finance. We will appoint a script editor to work with you. This is financed as part of the total sum awarded.
A.No. Our funding for individuals is restricted to those based in the region. However, in some cases we offer funding to companies who have strong links to regional talent, whose story has strong ties to the region or who are filming their project in the East of England.
A.Sam Burton in the production department can give advice on how to go about getting your film distributed or screened.
A.Careful consideration goes into examining the creative quality and commercial viability of the script, including the strength of the story, audience and market appeal, the track record or previous work of the writer, director or producer. Our fact sheets cover the types of films that have proved to be more viable at the box office.
A.Applications are assessed both internally and also externally – all scripts have external professional readers’ reports. Projects are discussed in detail at internal lottery meetings and then again at funding committee meetings. The funding committee – which is made up of members of the Screen East board with a range of relevant skills and experience – have the final decision.
A.If we decline your funding application we will outline the reasons why in the decline letter.
A.No.
A.Limited funds of up to £500 are made available each year for travel and project promotion through our Small Awards Fund. Check with the Production department to see if there are any available before you apply
A.We can advise on producers in the region, although will not make formal introductions, we can give you the information.
A.Yes, Screen East would be pleased to give advice on all areas of getting into the industry. Contact Sam Burton in the Production Department for information.
low carbon fund
A.1. All investments should be made within 3 years to 31st December 2012.
A.2. The entire investment is £3.5m and is composed as:
• £3m from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)
• £0.5m from the East of England Development Agency (EEDA)
A.3. The maximum amount is £250,000
A.4. The maximum percentage that Screen East can invest is 40% of the budget (subject to a £250,000 ceiling and the public to private percentage split)
A.5. The maximum percentage of public to private sector funding is 49% to 51%
A.6. We always seek individual clarification from EEDA on this issue. We have determined that the following are treated as public funding sources:
• BBC
• C4 – awaiting confirmation as at 16th March 2010
• Any funding provided internationally by any other Sovereign State is considered as public sector
• EU Media
A.7. Where the standard industry requirement/expectation is to have a completion bond in place then Screen East will expect this. Screen East is currently considering a “Bond Light” scheme and should this be introduced then we would require that all successful applicants subscribe to this scheme.
A.9. If your core business is outside the East of England you will need to demonstrate a longer term commitment to the East of England – a minimum of 12 months trading in the East of England through a Special Purpose Vehicle, branch or subsidiary business.
A.10. Out target is to invest in 15 projects. However, based upon market conditions this can be flexed either way through agreement with EEDA.
A.11. These are the combined ERDF/EEDA anticipated outputs:
• 15 investments
• 15 new businesses created in the East of England of which 3 are new businesses attracted to the region
• 17 jobs safeguarded and 60 jobs created in the East of England (resulting directly or indirectly from the scheme). The definition of a full-time job created is “not existing before the investment was made and continuing for a minimum of 12 months.” In addition a full-time job is defined as, “30 hours or over per week and lasting for one year evidenced by PAYE records.” 2 part-time posts for a full year minimum could be substituted. The definition of a job safeguarded is, “a full-time job existing
• From the previous point – 8 of those 17 jobs should be female
• 15 successful innovations in SMEs – this results from the Low Carbon Production techniques and reduced carbon footprint
• 120 businesses engaged with the Low Carbon Knowledge Base
• Across the investment portfolio the fund will achieve recoupment plus 10% return on investment. Screen East investment cannot be subordinated to any other finance in your plan. Notwithstanding the previous sentence we will expect to recoup pro-rata and pari passu with other financiers (which may not be equity investors)
A.12. Yes! The fund is aimed at small to medium-sized businesses which we would assume would be incorporated under the Companies Act 2006 (relates to an individual company or a group of companies if the applicant is a wholly owned subsidiary. For the purposes of wholly owned – this is where the shares of a subsidiary are more than 24% owned by another company):
• Less than 250 employees
• Net worth less than €43m
• Annual turnover less than €50m
A.13. We like to think that our processes are quicker than some other public funding sources:
• You must firstly attend the two workshops – Low Carbon Production and Investment Readiness
• Then complete and submit an Expression of Interest
• Screen East will send your treatment/draft our for professional review
• The Screen East team will meet and decide if they wish to invite a full application – normally within 10- working days of receiving an Expression of Interest
• Once we receive a full application we will attach a Lead Officer to your project alongside investment and low carbon consultants with a view to meeting the next available Green Light panel. The investment consultant is a sector-specific, experienced, industry professional
• A number of meetings will be arranged between your team and Screen East representatives to “iron out” any issues or provide clarifications.
• Your application will be scored – as stated in the Investment Readiness Workshop – and will be submitted along with a recommendation to our Green Light Investment Team. The Green Light Investment Team is composed of experienced, industry professionals from across feature film, TV production and computer games
• Normally, only in those cases where applications are recommended for investment will the applicant’s production team be invited to present their project to the Green Light Panel. However, the Green Light Panel actually makes final investment decisions and have the authority to over-rule any recommendation
• The decision on investment, Subject to Contract, is normally available 24 hours after the close of the meeting.
A.14. Whilst UK Film Council funding is not involved in this scheme Screen East always adopts best practice. The Appeals Procedure can be obtained from Mike Lavery at
