Getting to know…Matt

Say hello to our design intern Matt!

Matt has joined the team here at Shorthose Russell as part of our new internship programme in partnership with Norwich University of the Arts. He will be with us for three months whilst he learns all about what it takes to work in a creative agency.

Get to know him more with our quick fire questions:

What’s your job title and what do you do?

My name is Matt Walker. I am currently a Junior Designer & Artworker Intern at Shorthose Russell. Within the first few weeks of my three month internship I have carried out a number of daily tasks for a range of clients, including image manipulation, editorial/layout design, resizing designs into new dimensions for print and carrying out amendments on multiple jobs for clients.

Who inspires you?

My Nan & Grandad – Throughout my childhood and teenage years I have been close to my Nan & Grandad and they have always inspired me to do my best and achieve goals in my life and career as a Graphic Designer. Additionally, over the last year or so I have been watching videos from Gary Vaynerchuk who is a Belarusian American entrepreneur, author, internet personality and speaker. I find his content and videos on social media incredibly motivational and inspiring, which enables me to gain a positive outlook and strong mindset at all times, even when things go wrong or don’t go to plan.

What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to?

Is it weird to say that I have never been to a concert? They just haven’t interested me, but I love to connect my phone in the car or my speakers at home and have a concert of my own!

Where is your favourite place in the world?

Where I have been – Antigua. It was amazing! I went there on holiday back in 2007 as my parents made the decision to get married out there. Even though I was only 9 years old at the time it was a lovely experience, which I can remember it as if it was last week.

Where I would like to go – I would love to go to America! Being 1/8  American (if that counts) I have been increasingly interested in the American culture and automotive industry. I have been to multiple American Car Shows in the UK with my Grandparents, but I would love to get a feel of the car scene and culture out there.

If you had to be an animal what would it be?

If I was to be an animal, I would be a spider. Well… as a human being I don’t like spiders as it is and I find them incredibly annoying trying to catch them round my bedroom floor. Besides, I think it would be hilarious from a spiders perspective, being able to see people’s reactions as they try and catch me running around playing hide and seek on the floor. It must be great to have 8 legs as well!

What are you currently binging on Netflix?

Believe it or not I don’t have a Netflix account! I don’t really watch too much television, but I am a sucker for Emmerdale… Does that count!? On the other hand, if I was to binge on Netflix it would have to be Friday Night Dinner. Even though I have watched all the episodes multiple times, they are absolutely hilarious and I can’t wait for the new episodes to come out next year.

If you could swap places with anyone who would it be?

If I could swap places with anyone it would be my Dad, because he is the only working parent in our family and he works incredibly hard as a builder and bricklayer to provide for our family of four. Therefore, I would love to swap places with him to give him a break and show that I am grateful for what he has done to provide over the years for our family, but he has always given me one piece of advice. DO NOT become a builder or bricklayer!

Do you have a secret talent?

Hmmm… Well, I can flare my nostrils. It has always been a Letchworth (my Mum’s maiden name) thing which has run in the family for a few generations. Bit weird I know…

If you were a crayon what colour would it be?

It would have to be red! Red is my favourite colour. Even though red is associated with anger, fire and blood, I refer to the colour red as being a connotation of energy, passion and strength.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

If I could have any superpower it would be invisibility. Probably shouldn’t be saying this but imagine what you could get away with being invisible! I can’t think of any negative sides to being invisible, but I suppose you could get bored of being able to do whatever you want all the time.
