Supporting Age UK Norfolk’s Age Old Pub Quiz fundraiser

Much-needed funds, a virtual pub quiz and a hugely worthwhile cause

The Great British public have a pretty impressive track record when it comes to causes – every year we donate millions of pounds to charity, setting new records as we go for whichever set piece fundraiser’s turn it is to tug at the heartstrings and help us part with our cash.

It’s fair to assume that average charitable donations will take a dive this year as people all over the UK are forced to take a fresh look at their finances in the wake of Covid-19, but as the story of Colonel Tom Moore so clearly shows – giving is in our DNA, and nothing – not even a global pandemic – is going to quash people’s deep-rooted desire to help others out where they can.

NHS workers are the focus for this collective good will right now, and deservedly so, but beyond the headlines and the claps and laps, we must not forget how tough it is for some of the smaller charities at the moment – demand for whose services has rocketed in recent weeks, just as their income from shops, corporates, and public donations has understandably sunk like a stone.

One such charity doing amazing work on our own doorstep through this crisis is our client Age UK Norfolk.

A reduced staff and small army of volunteers are currently providing a vital lifeline to thousands of elderly people across the county – many of whom have been cut off from family or friends during lockdown and are relying on the charity for support.

They’re doing the best they can but reaching out and responding to all those in need requires a steady inflow of cash – something the charity just can’t rely on in the weeks and months to come.

That’s why I’m incredibly proud of the way the Shorthose Russell team has over the last week helped to coordinate and promote a virtual pub quiz aimed at bringing friends, family and colleagues together while raising as much money for the Age UK Norfolk team as possible.

The Age Old Pub Quiz fundraiser will be broadcast live on Age UK Norfolk’s YouTube from 18:30 to 19:45 on Thursday May 7.

Our own Head of Digital, Paul Edwards will be hosting proceedings and running through six rounds of questions, enabling you, your colleagues, friends or family to compete against each other from the comfort of your own home and award bragging rights to the winner accordingly.

We’re spreading the word far and wide and targeting a big turnout on the night, so it would be great if you can join us and share the details with anyone you think might be interested.

Here’s what you need to do to play:

  • Challenge your friends , family or colleagues to take part – you’ll be playing against each other, not other groups
  • Decide how you’re going to bring them all together – Zoom, House Party, or Teams for ex-ample
  • Go here to make a donation ahead of the quiz
  • Tune in here on Thursday from 18.30 for an 18:45 start
  • Get busy getting quizzy
  • Declare your own group’s winner just in time for everyone to show their appreciation as part of the weekly Clap for Carers and Key Workers

All funds raised will go directly towards supporting elderly people in Norfolk through Age UK’s Covid 19 Emergency Appeal.

Thanks for reading this far and if you do decide to take part, have fun and good luck – I look forward to comparing scores!

Donate to the fundraiser.
Join the quiz on Thursday.
