My time at Shorthose Russell

Our graduate trainee, Stacey Lingwood, tells all about her time at Shorthose Russell.

I was lucky enough to join Shorthose Russell straight from university, and honestly, I didn’t know what to expect. I had never considered a career in PR or Marketing before leaving university, as I had come from a predominately events and tourism background.

I had read lots of job adverts however nothing really tickled my fancy until I saw the job for PR Graduate Trainee. This was the first time where I had thought, wow that sounds interesting, I could give that a go!

I wasn’t sure what to expect. The world of PR and Marketing was completely new to me and I would be starting from scratch. I imagined the office would be quite busy and I was right, it is busy, but not too busy. Although everyone is working on their own projects, there’s still time to give someone else some help or advice, or brainstorm new ideas as one big team.

You mention PR to someone and they normally just nod and pretend to understand what that means – I was the same. So what does PR actually mean? According to the Chartered Institute of Public Relations, “PR is the discipline which looks after reputation, with the aim of earning understanding and support and influencing opinion and behaviour”. As well as learning what PR is, I’ve also learnt how to write a press release, what crisis management is and how vital social media has become in increasing brand awareness.

Working at Shorthose Russell has given me an insight to agency life and how much work and effort goes into delivering PR and advertising campaigns for clients.

The highlight of my time here has got to be working on the Bernard Matthews Youth Awards! The months of hard work leading up to the awards was brilliant, it allowed me to see how much planning goes into such a large scale event. I have enjoyed every minute of it from the planning, filming our young finalists and the big day itself. The awards ceremony was spectacular and really inspiring to meet so many brilliant young people.

Although sadly my time has come to an end, I’m really glad I had the opportunity to be part of the Shorthose Russell team. I have learnt so much in a short period of time and it has opened my eyes to a whole new industry that I had never considered working in before now. Thanks Shorthose Russell!
