Newspapers: a badge of honour for the disenfranchised?

Norfolk based media company Archant announced today the launch of Britain’s first ‘pop up’ newspaper in response to the Brexit vote. The publication will be called ‘The New European’ and only four issues are planned. The New European will not be aligned with old political divisions but with ‘an enthusiasm and love for Europe; a new quality newspaper that gives voice to the values of the 48% who voted Remain’. It aims to provide in-depth analysis of the Brexit process, its implications and progress as well as a celebration of European life and culture.

This follows the launch of ’24’, the north of England’s own national daily newspaper which aims to put ‘national news first, with a regional emphasis’. It takes 95% of its content from the Press Association, similar to free national daily the Metro, but with a distinctly northern ‘slant’ on national stories.

So will The New European and 24 challenge expectations of what a news publication is in 2016? For those in the Remain camp and those living in the north who feel unrepresented by the traditional press, these publications might appear as a panacea to today’s modern news industry. but equally this could be a false dawn as the demise of The New day revealed.
